Modern Sprout LLC (MS) is a Chicago-based design shop and manufacturer that launched via Kickstarter in 2013 and has become a leader in the grow-your-own movement with its innovative indoor and outdoor garden-focused lifestyle goods. Our portfolio currently includes seed kits, grow kits, gift sets, candles, plant care accessories, and grow lights. Our collection of over 150 SKUs has introduced a new and highly sought-after category to home and gift retailers across the continent – gifts that grow. Modern Sprout can be found on the shelves at national retailers such as Target, Nordstrom, World Market and at over 2,000 independent retailers across the country.
We are seeking a bright, trend-savvy, and detail-oriented Senior Graphic Designer to lead the charge on packaging design that’s as thoughtful as it is beautiful. This role blends creative vision with execution—developing elevated, sustainable packaging and product solutions that resonate with our customers across both retail and e-commerce. This high-impact role is responsible for directing design from concept through production, contributing to the ongoing evolution of our brand and product aesthetic. This position reports to the Director of Product Development and works closely with the founders and cross-functional teams to bring new products to life.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
· Collaborate with the Director of Product Development, co-founders, and cross-functional teams to define goals, align strategy, and manage timelines for each product launch
· Lead design development—from mood boards and initial copy concepts to final production—creating elevated, sustainable packaging and PDQ displays that communicate product benefits and delight our customer
· Manage vendor relationships, dielines, material selection, proofing, and prototypes to ensure high-quality, print-ready output—making sure work is on time and on cost.
· Maintain organized files and version control across all active projects and packaging SKUs
· Monitor the general competitive landscape of relevant consumer products, and stay ahead of graphic design, CMF, and packaging trends and innovations, particularly in sustainable materials and structures
· Evolve Modern Sprout’s brand identity, create and maintain style guides, define CMF standards, and build reusable asset libraries to keep every touchpoint on brand across development, marketing and sales.
· Manage freelance designers, copywriters, photographers, stylists, and print vendors as needed.
· Support cross-functional needs, including design of tradeshow displays, custom packaging / corporate gifting design
OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE:
· 6–8+ yrs in packaging/graphic design for CPG, lifestyle, or home/garden brands; portfolio shows best‑in‑class work.
· Adobe CC fluency; 3‑D/rendering skills a plus.
· Expert in print production, materials, die‑lines, proofing, and vendor management.
· Proficient with project‑management tools (Asana, Trello, Monday, etc.).
· Strategic thinker & creative problem‑solver who juggles multiple deadlines with impeccable attention to detail.
· Excellent communicator and presenter; comfortable guiding cross‑functional teams.
· Passion for design, sustainability, and Modern Sprout’s mission.
· Green thumb is a plus but not a requirement.
